What cheer!!! Sometimes you discover a secret simply by not looking for it. We were visiting one of our favorite tea farms in the High Mountains of the famous Nantou region in the middle of Taiwan. The farmer took some time sorting out our tea order. They don’t produce much tea every year and have never previously exported it. Whilst finalizing the paperwork we wandered around his warehouse. Two enormous clay vats were tucked away in a dark corner. When I asked him what they were he smiled and walked us through the history of their family's hundred years of tea making. This tea, he told us, was the family heritage tea.
Gently and meticulously roasted every year for 25 years, this tea is the product of dedication.
This tea's unique flavour takes you into another world. The flavours have seeped into the leaves from the surrounding mountain streams. Rich with earthy minerals, then flowing through thick woody forests they have fed the plant and given life to these spectacular leaves.
We have found this tea to have a subtle sour foretaste and a slightly woody sweet aftertaste.
In the mythology of an indigenous tribe of Taiwan, it is strongly believed that a Clouded Leopard guided the original forefathers to their ancestral land where they have now lived for centuries. Sadly, the Clouded Leopard was hunted to extinction almost 100 years ago.
Bereft of an apex predator, this has wrecked havoc on the region's ecosystem. At Taihoku Tea Company we are donating a percentage of sales of our Clouded Leopard tea to a magnificent effort by local zoologists, in partnership with indigenous tribes of Taiwan, to reintroduce the Clouded Leopard into its natural habitat.
The tea is stored in a ceramic jar which is nestled inside a beautiful lacquered walnut box. Your tea will continue to age for years to come. Drink it on special occasions, and you can even enjoy it cold the next day for an unparalleled iced tea experience. We hope you enjoy this gem from our treasure trove of teas.
